Buyer's Guide
Choosing a major appliance is a long-term decision: a refrigerator or a washer usually stays in a home for ten years or more. These short guides cover the main product types and the features worth comparing. For general advice on planning a purchase, read Purchasing New Appliances.
Refrigerators
Top-freezer models are the most affordable and space-efficient. Bottom-freezer and French door models put fresh food at eye level, while side-by-side units suit narrow kitchens with limited door swing. Built-in and counter-depth refrigerators sit flush with cabinetry.
- Measure the opening, door swing and the path into the kitchen before choosing a size.
- Compare total and freezer capacity in cubic feet, not just exterior dimensions.
- Look for ENERGY STAR qualification, adjustable shelves and humidity-controlled crispers.
- Ice and water dispensers are convenient but need a water line and filter changes.
Dishwashers
Built-in dishwashers are typically 24" wide; compact 18" models fit smaller kitchens and portable units connect to the kitchen faucet. Noise level (dBA), the number of wash cycles, a third rack and stainless steel tubs are the main differences between models.
Ovens, Stoves and Ranges
Decide on the fuel first: gas gives instant flame control, electric smoothtops are easy to clean and induction is fast and efficient. Freestanding ranges are the most common; slide-in models and separate cooktops with wall ovens offer a built-in look. Convection fans cook more evenly and self-cleaning saves time.
Washers and Dryers
Front-load washers use less water and energy and can be stacked; top-load washers are generally more affordable and faster. Compare drum capacity, spin speed and cycle options. Dryers come in electric and gas versions - check which hookup you have, and consider moisture sensors that end the cycle automatically.
TV, Plasma and Flat Panel
Pick the screen size by viewing distance - roughly 1.5 to 2.5 times the diagonal. LED/LCD sets are bright and efficient, while plasma and OLED panels are known for deep blacks. Check resolution, the number of HDMI inputs, refresh rate and smart features.
DVD Players and Recorders
Blu-ray players play both Blu-ray discs and DVDs and often stream online content. DVD recorders and DVD/VHS combos are useful for archiving home video collections.
